Paro – Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu – Paro

Introduction

Immerse yourself in the mystical beauty of Bhutan with this week-long journey. Experience city tours, dramatic scenic drives through mountain passes, serene riverside landscapes, and cultural connections as you visit small villages, walk through rice paddies, and explore a traditional farmhouse. This tour captures the essence of Bhutan’s rich heritage and stunning natural beauty.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Drive to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro Airport and transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital city. Enjoy your first evening in Thimphu, taking in the serene surroundings and preparing for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Thimphu City Exploration

Discover the highlights of Thimphu with a full-day city tour. Visit the impressive Trashichho Dzong, also known as the “fortress of the glorious religion,” Memorial Chorten, the National Library, the Art School, and the Textile and Folk Heritage Museum. Complete the day with a visit to the Government Handicrafts Emporium, perfect for souvenir shopping.

Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha – Wangdue

Depart Thimphu and take a scenic drive across the stunning Dochula Pass, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. Continue to Punakha and Wangdue. In the afternoon, explore Punakha Dzong, dramatically situated at the confluence of the Pochu and Mochu Rivers. Then, take a peaceful hike through rice paddies and small villages to visit the famous Chimi Lhakhang, the “Fertility Temple” dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kinley.

Day 4: Punakha – Wangdue – Thimphu

Begin the day with a short walk to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture. Afterward, explore nearby villages for a glimpse into traditional Bhutanese life. In the afternoon, return to Thimphu, crossing Dochula Pass and passing Simtokha Dzong along the way.

Day 5: Thimphu to Paro

After breakfast, drive back to Paro. Explore the ruins of Durkgyel Dzong, a historic fortress, before heading to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse. Gain insight into local culture as you experience the simple yet rich lifestyle of rural Bhutan. Later, enjoy a day trip to the picturesque Haa Valley, driving through the scenic Chelela Pass with magnificent views of Mount Jhumolhari.

Day 6: Paro

Today is your opportunity to explore more of Paro at a relaxed pace. Take in the valley’s rich culture and landscapes or enjoy a hike to one of Bhutan’s many beautiful monasteries. The day is yours to soak in the peaceful atmosphere of Bhutan.

Day 7: Departure from Paro

Transfer to Paro Airport for your onward flight or extend your stay by adding on a tour to Bhutan, Nepal, or India.
